lyrics
There was a man come from the north, he came one day to me
he said he'd take me to his home where he would marry me
"You fetch me up your mother's food, and fetch your father's gold
and take me to the stable yard where we'll stave off the cold."
I fetched him up my mother's food, I fetched my father's gold
I took him to the stable yard where we would take no cold
"Now mount me on your finest mare, oh mount me up" cried he,
we rode together all the night until we reached the sea.
"Pull up my pretty maid'" he said, "pull up then!" shouted he,
"for six young girls I've drowned here, and seventh shall you be,
but first take off that silken gown and give it up to me,
would be a shame to let it rot all in the salty sea."
I bid him turn his back to me, as I removed my gown,
I put my arms about his waist and I dragged him to the ground.
"Oh stay you there, you false young man, oh sink beneath the sea,
for six young girls you've drowned here but seventh I won't be."
I mounted on the milk white steed, I led the dappled gray,
I made it to my father's home three hours before the day,
I never told of that false young man who came one day to me,
I laid his bones beneath the waves of the vast and salty sea.
Kirsty Merryn’s debut album ‘She & I’ was released in 2017 to widespread praise.
Kirsty is singer-
songwriter whose music is heavily anchored in the folk tradition. She delights audiences with delicately introspective piano based songs and sophisticated musical style, balanced beautifully by an intimate and finely observational lyrical content.

Just getting back into folk music. In my folking days it was Nic Jones, Martin Carthy, Dick Gaughan, the Dansfields etc., and I was afraid there wouldn't be anything as good around today. I was wrong. This is beautiful and stands with the best. Del Buck
